DNP Achieved 190K Ton CO₂ Reduction in FY2023 with Eco-Friendly Packaging

Will exhibit at 26th INTERPHEX

Tokyo, June 20, 2024, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce that in FY2023, we successfully reduced CO2 emissions1 from total annual shipments of eco-friendly packaging2 by approximately 190,000 tons (t) throughout the life cycle of our products. That figure is approximately 20,000t greater than the 170,000t increase seen in the previous FY3.

As part of our corporate activities aimed at realizing a carbon-free society, DNP will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions (Scope 3) throughout the entire supply chain of our client companies by developing and providing eco-friendly packaging.

CO2 Emission-Reduction Related DNP Initiatives

DNP is strengthening the development and provision of eco-friendly packaging targeting to reduce the burden on the global environment. As part of our efforts to visualize the environmental contribution level through our business, since 2019 we have continuously calculated the CO2 reduction amount from the shipment volume of packages.

DNP visualizes CO2 emissions throughout the entire life cycle of provided packaging. In April 2024, we also expanded the scope of certification for initiatives providing third-party approved calculations4 to companies and organizations. We are also working to visualize and provide CO2 emission volumes over a broad business area.

DNP will exhibit our eco-friendly packaging products at INTERPHEX JAPAN 2024 - 26th Int'l Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Manufacturing Expo5 to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from June 26 to June 28, 2024.

In addition to our eco-friendly packaging products that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, we will also introduce our environment-related services, Scope 1, 2 and 3 management efficiency services and our resource circulation consulting service.

DNP Initiatives Targeting Reductions in the Environmental Burden

DNP constantly considers the harmonious coexistence between business activities and the global environment positions responses to environmental challenges as one of our most important management issues. The DNP Group Environmental Policy has been established for all employees, and we are promoting activities with a strong environmental consciousness throughout the supply chain, as well as complying with laws and regulations. In March 2020, we drew up the DNP Group Environmental Vision 2050 and are accelerating our efforts toward the realization of a carbon free, recycling-oriented society that is in harmony with nature.

One of these targets, The Medium-Term Reduction Target For GHG Emissions Targeting FY 2030, is now expected to be achieved ahead of schedule, and a new, ambitious target in line with the international standard 1.5°C Target was drawn up in April 20246.

We have set a goal of increasing the share of eco-friendly packaging sales  to 100% in our packaging-related product sales, and are promoting a range of initiatives based on guidelines and indicators of eco-friendly design.

Going forward, DNP will continue to strive to improve the value of eco-friendly products and services, and work together with stakeholders in all sectors and industries to realize a sustainable society in order to create a better future.

Compared to packaging using petroleum-derived materials, the amount of CO2 reduction achieved by packaging using plant-derived materials is equivalent to approximately 7,400t.

4: DNP acquired SuMPO Third Party Certification Carbon Footprint Comprehensive Calculation System certification from the Sustainable Management Promotion Organizatio n. The DNP Life Cycle CO2 Certification System, No. CCS-21-000-01, is used in the calculations.
