DNP Commences Provision of Virtual Private Network to Create a Secure Communications Environment for Use with Network Cameras

Preventing image data leakage and virus infection via authentication and encryption functions

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce the October 20commencement of the provision of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution thatcreates a highly secure communications environment for the safe and secure communicationof video images from network cameras. By using authentication and encryptionfunctions, which remove the need to go through the relay server, it has beenpossible to offer the DNP-developed VPN as an aware-application correspondingto the Axis Camera Application Platform (ACAP) developed by Lund, Sweden-based,Axis Communications AB (Axis), a leading maker of network cameras.

[Background]

In recent years we have seen increased cases of monitoring cameras installedat supermarkets and car parks managed via an internet-connected format. In linewith this development, there has been a sharp increase in cases of image dataleaks due to password or system defects, and Distributed Denial of Service Attacks,a monitor camera channeled attack, whereby mass traffic from multiple sourcesattempts to crash service availability. Such challenges have now become socialproblems. In order to heighten the security of network cameras, the standardapproach has been to connect cameras to VPN devices and create secure communications. In these instances, however, it has been necessary to purchase expensive VPNequipment and set numerous time-consuming connections, and challenges have arisengiven the need to switch network configurations and settings with the additionof each new outlet.

In order to overcome such challenges, DNP has integrated DNP Multi-Peer VPN,a low cost VPN enabler into the network camera developed by Axis, and has developeda system capable of simple and secure network connection and authentication.

[DNP Multi-Peer VPN Network Camera Applications]

In this latest development it has been possible to achieve a secure communicationsenvironment by integrating DNP Multi-Peer VPN as an add-on application withthe Axis-produced, ACAP-based, network cameras.

The DNP Multi-Peer VPN is comprised of a software development kit for theencryption of communications data, and a cloud environment, or, alternatively,as a VPN management server internally installed in the in-house network environment. The server enables automatic authentication of multiple network cameras alongwith peer-to-peer communications removing the need for dedicated VPN equipment, and it is possible to directly forward image data from cameras in a safe fashionto image storage servers, display monitors, smart phones and computers. Forwardedimage data is normally stored once on a cloud server, but with the new solutionthis is no longer necessary. It is also possible to perform two-way VPN connectionfrom a single camera to monitors in multiple locations at the same time.

The new solution will facilitate the safe sending to management servers ofhigh resolution images from Axis network cameras installed as part of managementoperations at supermarkets, commercial buildings and carparks. It is also possibleto directly confirm the operational status of the network cameras from smartphones and tablet terminals.

[Looking Ahead]

DNP will offer DNP Multi-Peer VPN to numerous companies and industries usingnetwork cameras, at the same time as engaging in marketing activities targetingICT-related operations that develop software, equipment and services, aimingfor sales of 700 million yen in FY 2018.
