DNP Achieves 150K Ton CO₂ Reduction in FY 2021 with Eco-Friendly Packaging
Aiming to achieve 100% eco-friendly packaging share in FY 2030
Jul5,2022
Tokyo, July 5, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is proud to announce that in FY 2021 we achieved a CO2 reduction effect of approximately 150,000 tons1, based on calculations of the total shipment volume of eco-friendly packaging2. The 150,000 ton figure is equivalent to a forest area of approximately 11,900 ha, or an area that could fill the Tokyo Dome, a large sports and entertainment venue in the Japanese capital, about 2,500 times.

We are strengthening the development and provision of eco-friendly packaging in order to reduce the burden on the global environment. As part of our efforts to visualize the degree of contribution to the environment through our business, we calculated the CO2 reduction amount from the shipment volume of packages using plant-derived raw materials per year in FY 2019 and FY 2020.
1: Calculated for the stages of raw material procurement, manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of eco-friendly packaging. In particular, the reduction amounts based on packaging using plant-derived raw materials are equivalent to about 4,700 tons when compared with the package using petroleum-derived raw materials. We announce this figure every year.

DNP Initiatives Targeting Reductions in the Environmental Burden
DNP constantly considers the harmonious coexistence between business activities and the global environment positions responses to environmental challenges as one of our most important management issues. The DNP Group Environmental Policy has been established for all employees, and we are promoting activities with a strong environmental consciousness throughout the supply chain, as well as complying with laws and regulations. In March 2020, we drew up the DNP Group Environmental Vision 2050 and are accelerating efforts toward the realization of a carbon free, recycling-oriented society and in harmony with nature.
In particular, with the aim of realizing a carbon free society, we have set a goal of reducing GHG emissions from business activities at our business sites to effectively zero by 2050, and are promoting reductions in GHG emissions through our products and services. In addition, DNP has been focusing on the development and provision of eco-friendly packaging with the aim of providing the three values of CO2 reduction, resource recycling, and the conservation of the natural environment. In April 2022, we established design guidelines and indicators that contribute to environmental friendliness throughout the entire life cycle, and also set a goal of increasing the eco-friendly packaging share of packaging-related product sales to 100% in FY 2030.
In Japan, the Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics was passed in April 2022, and the Guidelines for Design of Plastic-Containing Products have been established to promote the 3Rs of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle + Renewable resources. In response to these movements, DNP obtained SuMPO Third Party Certification Carbon Footprint Comprehensive Calculation System certification from the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization in April 2022, and has launched full scale operations of the life cycle CO2 certification system3 in Japan. We visualize CO2 emissions4 over the entire life cycle of packaging handled by DNP, and provide third-party approved calculation results to companies and organizations.
Going forward, DNP will continue to strive to improve the value of environmentally friendly products and services, and work with stakeholders in all sectors and industries to realize a sustainable society in order to create a better future, ourselves.
